The aim of the project is to restore salmon habitat and move erosive forces away from CN Rail and Squamish Nation banks.

BACKGROUND

‘Kwenimach’ is the Squamish name for Mosquito Creek.

The lower elevations were logged prior to 1915, with the upper elevations logged from 1950 – 1970.

The foreshore between Fell and Bewicke was filled and extended 500m into the inlet for industrial use (1912-1915).

Currently Mosquito Creek supports limited fish and wildlife due to habitat and water quality limitations. The creek and its tributaries have been at the centre of several recent efforts to preserve the wild fish populations.

Fisheries & Oceans Canada approved salmon habitat enhancement works for Mosquito Creek (Kwenimach) in North Vancouver in September 2020.

The project involved adding large log and boulder clusters to parts of the creek downstream of Bewicke Avenue and upstream of the CN Rail Bridge.

North Shore Streamkeepers led the fundraising for the work. Project funders and partners include the Squamish Nation, Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF), Patagonia, Seaspan, and Neptune Terminals. See the project notification poster below for the logos of all the partners.
