Municipal Reports – North Vancouver District: (Richard Boase)

The DNV proposes to lease a portion of the site at 2670 Lloyd Ave. to Turning Point Recovery Society to operate a recuperative space for women recovering from various issues. The land was purchased by the DNV in 1970, to be held for Park purposes… it is currently zoned Community Park. The land was neither reserved nor dedicated as park. DNV Environment staff was asked to provide a preliminary assessment and description of the application requirements to redevelop the site with a dwelling. DNV staff have conducted their assessment and advised that the site is within a number of Development Permit Areas and will require further detailed review. More details can be found on the DNV website at www.dnv.org

Streamkeeper concerns – why are we putting permanent buildings in a park? If not dedicated as park, easier to pull from park. We can send any questions to Julie Pavey or Richard Boase on this. Janet Dysart will field questions from the group to forward to the DNV.

At present no list for capitol works. DNV staff expect to have a detailed list of capital projects by April 2013.

Email from Richard Boase about NSSK having opportunity to provide input on this – DFO Consultation Period on the Intent to Regulate Aquatic Invasive Species … Fisheries and Oceans Canada is developing a regulatory proposal to manage and control Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) in Canada. The Department is seeking initial input regarding the intent to regulate AIS generally, and is interested in identifying which stakeholders are currently affected by AIS or may be affected by AIS regulations in the future. The online questionnaire will be posted for 60 days (until February 1, 2013), and Fisheries and Oceans Canada will also be pursuing other opportunities for further consultations. The background information can be found at http://isdm-gdsi.gc.ca/ais-eae/index-eng.asp

The Coho Society would like to partner with NSF&G, NSSK and DFO to present an ‘Adopt-a-Fish event this year in Heywood Park. Sandie Hollick Kenyon is being consulted as to when will be an appropriate date. Angela Neglemann from CNV expressed interest in participating in this event.

Ron den Daas opened a contemporary art exhibition ‘Wild New Territories’ on the weekend of January 12 – 13th that will run through to April 12, 2013. This is part of an international effort, which includes exhibitions in London and Berlin. This project looks at the ‘urban’ and the ‘Wild’ through the lens of Contemporary art and will explore, among other things the impact urban development has on local wildlife and some of the innovations available to enhance ecological sustainability. Workshops will be held though Artists for Kids, Stanley Park Ecology Society and the Vancouver Aquarium with the same team that has been developing community engagement with the Mackay Creek Hatchery. The workshops are now fully booked. For more information go to www.wildnewterritories.com

Morten Creek (Doug Hayman)

Chum – 26, 572 eyed eggs, and on January 1, Tacha saw the first alevins hatched, ATU’s, just passed the guideline of 498.

Coho – Broodstock, 6 females, 4 wild, 2 hatchery; 6 males, all wild but one. Doug taking hatchery heads to Capilano hatchery to determine where they may have strayed from. Males difficult to catch again this year. We lost one male which after trying to get milt discovered it was damaged internally and milt sack broken. This year we found copepods in mouth and gills on half of our broodstock. Doug enquired about them with Sandie who found and shared an old letter she had from Capilano about them along with a paper online describing them in a more general manner. Anyone wanting a copy can email me and I will forward it on.First coho spawn was Dec 3 and last Dec 29, doing 5 spawnings altogether. The coho seemed to have less and smaller eggs this year. One large female had a green egg estimate of 4030, while the rest were between 1300 and 2000. We will know better at time of shocking of our true green egg count. Figure maybe 12,000 – 13000 waiting to get eyed up. Coho juveniles in the pond – On November 26, average weight – 11.2 grams.

Had a call from Whistler about some ‘red material’ coming out of land fill from the Olympics getting into the Cheakamus River. This person wants to know if NSSK can give him a name to call to call and report it. Sandie gave Doug a couple of numbers and suggested to give enquiry to Zo Ann as well.

Discussion of Other Creeks and concerns:

Letter to PSF: Karen Munro, on behalf of North Shore Streamkeepers is preparing letter to Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) in support of Seymour Hatchery proposal for funds for new roof.

NSSK Website: (Dick Pearce) The North Shore Streamkeepers web site has been updated and is much more attractive and accessible. The chair who worked with Pat Morten on the revision said there is much more work to be done to continue its development and invited any members visiting the site to forward their comments to her. The format of the minutes has also been improved thanks to the secretary to improve their appearance and readability.

Meeting to discuss potential ecological enhancement opportunities with new Lions Gate Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plant(WWTP) Julie Pavey, in attendance suggested feedback from NSSK on our local creeks, local knowledge, historical or present data, studies, reports, ecological opportunities, etc., would be welcome input. There was a meeting on Monday, January 14 at DNV Municipal Hall to exchange information on opportunities identified and work done to date. Karen Munro has contacted Laurie Ford, P.Eng,LEED A.P and NSSK updated on contact list for this project.

New Business:Lynn Valley Village Christmas Tree (Janet Dysart) Received good comments on the Streamkeeper tree, which promoted goodwill and public awareness of the group. Voted to have again next year.

Guest Speaker– We were very fortunate,Tasha Murray from Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver (ISCMV) was able to give us an intensive one hour overview of invasive plants and some species, covering in particular streamside riparian area; important facts about practice on using herbicides; and how they are used on knotweed & hogweed. This gave a boost for the many information sessions going on about now with the City and areas on Invasive plant strategies. This program is designed to help volunteers for what they do on the ground. Very informative and enjoyable. Looking forward to a workshop – OUTDOOR VENU in the spring, inviting, Evergreen, West Vancouver Streamkeepers, and again possiblyat Hunter Park in the fall.

Thank you very much very Tasha!!
